Review guidelines
These rules exist for one reason: a review that follows them is useful to other renters and defensible if a landlord objects. One that doesn't is neither.
Write about your own experience
Review buildings you have lived in or landlords you have rented from. Secondhand accounts, rumours, and things you read elsewhere have no place here — they are the least useful and the most legally exposed kind of content we could host.
Be specific, and separate fact from opinion
“The boiler was out for eleven days in January and I filed a 311 complaint” is specific, checkable, and powerful. “They are criminals” is neither. Say what happened, when, and how it was handled. Opinions are welcome; state them as opinions.
No personal information
Do not include anyone's phone number, email address, home address, or social media profile — including the super's, and including your own. Do not include your apartment number: it identifies you to your landlord, which is the fastest way to make an anonymous review stop being anonymous.
Naming a management company or an owner is fine — that is the point of the site. Naming an individual employee is not.
No harassment, threats, or slurs
Reviews containing threats or slurs are rejected on submission and removed if they get through. There is no version of this that helps a renter find an apartment.
One review per tenancy
Don't post repeatedly about the same building to move its rating. Duplicate and coordinated posting is detected and removed, and it undermines the only thing that makes these ratings worth reading.
Landlords
If you own or manage a building listed here and believe a review is false, use the report link on that review and tell us what specifically is inaccurate. We read every report. We do not remove reviews for being unflattering, and we do not sell removals — but a review containing a demonstrably false statement of fact will be taken down.
How moderation works
Reviews are published immediately and screened automatically for profanity, threats, and personal information. Reported reviews go to a human moderator. Removals are logged with a reason and are reversible. A report is not a veto — reporting a review you simply disagree with will not remove it.
